Nigeria’s Super Eagles produced a spirited second-half comeback to earn a thrilling 3–3 draw against Russia in Tuesday’s international friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.
The match produced six goals, with Nigeria recovering from a 2–1 half-time deficit and securing the draw with a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser from Adams in the 90+4th minute.
Iheanacho Gives Nigeria Early Lead
Nigeria made the brighter start and took the lead in the 10th minute through Kelechi Iheanacho, giving the Super Eagles an early advantage.
However, Russia gradually grew into the contest and began to dominate possession and territory.
The hosts levelled in the 30th minute when Lechi Sadulaev found the net before Matvey Kislyak struck in first-half added time at 45+2 minutes to send Russia into the break 2–1 ahead.
Russia Maintains Control
Russia’s first-half dominance was reflected in the statistics.
The hosts enjoyed 61% possession and registered 11 shots compared with Nigeria’s four. Russia also had four shots on target to Nigeria’s one and completed 264 accurate passes against the Super Eagles’ 145.
Russia also won the territorial battle from set pieces, recording four corners to Nigeria’s three.
Nigeria, however, demonstrated considerable defensive resilience, making 18 clearances, compared with Russia’s eight.
Miranchuk Extends Russia’s Lead
Russia continued their momentum after the interval and increased their advantage in the 54th minute, with Aleksey Miranchuk making it 3–1.
At that stage, the hosts appeared to be firmly in control of the contest.
But Nigeria refused to surrender.
Super Eagles Launch Dramatic Comeback
The Super Eagles responded strongly as the second half progressed.
Edokpolor pulled one back for Nigeria in the 78th minute, reducing Russia’s advantage to 3–2 and giving the Nigerians renewed belief.
Nigeria then pushed forward in search of an equaliser, and their persistence finally paid off deep into stoppage time.
Adams scored in the 90+4th minute to complete a remarkable comeback and secure a 3–3 draw for the Super Eagles.

The result will offer both encouragement and areas for reflection for Éric Chelle.
Nigeria’s first-half performance exposed the difficulty of sustaining possession and controlling the tempo against a Russia side that was comfortable on the ball. The hosts’ 61% possession and 11–4 advantage in shots demonstrated their superiority during much of the opening half.
The Super Eagles were also forced into 18 clearances, underlining the defensive pressure they faced.
Yet Nigeria showed an important quality in the second half: resilience.
After falling two goals behind, the Super Eagles continued to compete, reduced the deficit through Edokpolor and produced a stoppage-time equaliser through Adams.
For Chelle, the comeback provides a positive takeaway, but the defensive pressure and lack of sustained possession will remain areas requiring attention.
For Nigeria, the 3–3 draw represents a match in which they were tested, fell behind twice and still found a way back.
