Taraba WTD: NUT boss Solomon, tasks govt on professionalism

The Taraba State chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Solomon Nathan has stressed the need for the State government to accord greater recognition on the teaching profession.

Comrade Nathan who said, qualified teachers should be given opportunities to contribute their expertise to policy formulation and administration within the civil service stated this Monday while speaking on the event, 2026 World Teachers Day (WDT) held at NUT House, in Jalingo, the State capital.

He further called on the state government to appoint qualified and experienced teachers to the position of Permanent Secretary in the state civil service noting that the experience and professional knowledge of teachers could add significant value to the education sector and the wider public administration.

Solomon said the theme, “Standing with Teachers: Sixty Years of Promoting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping the Future,” underscored the critical role teachers continue to play in strengthening the education sector, promoting professional development and shaping the future of society.

In a remark, the State Government Commended the untiring duties of Teachers in the state, assuring Continued Support to their workforce.

The Commissioner for Secondary, Technical and Vocational Education, Augustina Godwin,
who was represented by the Secretary of the ministry, Rabi Sunday, said the government recogniszed the vital role teachers play in the development of the state and would continue to provide an enabling environment for academic excellence.

She noted that teachers had played a significant role in the successful implementation of the state government’s free education policy, urging them to sustain their commitment and dedication to duty.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Primary and Nursery Education, Fatima Habeeb, represented by the ministry’s Secretary, Ahmadu Danjuma, commended teachers for their positive impact on society through the education and upbringing of children.

Habeeb lauded the resilience and dedication of teachers in the discharge of their responsibilities, assuring them that the government would continue to prioritise the prompt payment of their salaries.

She also assured teachers that their promotions and annual increments would be considered by the government in due course, while urging them to remain committed to their duties.

Also, the Chairperson of the Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB), Christiana Taninga Binga, urged teachers to remain committed to raising future leaders, assuring them of the government’s continued support towards improving their welfare and working condition.

Mrs. Binga however, described the occasion as a moment to recognise the commitment, sacrifice and hard work of teachers who according to her, shape the minds and futures of children in the state.

Our Correspondent reports that TSUBEB oversees both primary and junior secondary education in the State.
