Soldier Killed as Troops Repel Attack on Plateau Community

A Nigerian soldier, Lance Corporal Yusuf Zakari, was killed while defending residents of Manja community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State during an attack by suspected armed assailants.

According to security sources, the incident occurred on Saturday when troops from Sector 9 of Operation Enduring Peace confronted the attackers, who were reportedly advancing through the Manja Forest towards the community, which borders Bokkos Local Government Area.

The deployment was aimed at preventing the attackers from infiltrating the village. During the operation, a fierce gun battle broke out, resulting in the death of Lance Corporal Zakari.

A security source, who spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said the troops came under heavy gunfire while serving as a blocking force against the advancing attackers.

“The troops were positioned to stop the attackers from infiltrating Manja community, which has experienced repeated security threats linked to the herder-farmer crisis in recent months,” the source said.

The source added that the confrontation began at about 1:25 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, and developed into an intense exchange of gunfire.

“Despite putting up a determined resistance, Lance Corporal Zakari was fatally wounded while defending his fellow soldiers and civilians. The attackers reportedly made away with his personal weapon before retreating,” the source added.

The incident was also confirmed by Jos-based conflict journalist Masara Kim Usman, who stated that the attackers stormed Manja village while many residents were attending church services, opening fire and setting homes ablaze.

He noted that a swift military response helped evacuate many civilians to safety but lamented the loss of the soldier, describing him as having paid the supreme sacrifice in defense of the community.

Usman further expressed concern over the recurring attacks in Plateau communities and called for prayers for the affected families and lasting peace in the state.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
