Kano Pillars host Sporting Lagos Saturday as Rangers, Rivers United, Barau and Plateau United lead a tightly packed early-season table
By NewsNexus Sports Desk
The EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) returns this weekend for Matchday 7, with 10 fixtures scheduled across Saturday and Sunday as the early-season race for points, positioning and momentum gathers pace.
The weekend begins on Saturday, October 3, with Kano Pillars hosting Sporting Lagos at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, at 4:00pm.
Nine further fixtures will be played on Sunday, October 4, including some of the weekend’s most closely watched encounters: Bendel Insurance vs Barau FC, Rangers International vs Abia Warriors, Enyimba vs Plateau United, Rivers United vs Ikorodu City and Doma United vs Warri Wolves.
The official NPFL schedule confirms all 10 Matchday 7 fixtures.
KANO PILLARS–SPORTING LAGOS OPENS THE WEEKEND
Kano Pillars will be looking to build on their home performances when they welcome Sporting Lagos to the Sani Abacha Stadium.
Pillars currently occupy sixth position after six matches, while Sporting Lagos are ninth. The Kano side held Enyimba to a goalless draw in their last listed Matchday 6 fixture, while Sporting Lagos drew 1–1 with unbeaten Barau FC.
Sporting, however, have already demonstrated that they can trouble established opposition this season. They recorded a notable 3–2 away victory over nine-time champions Enyimba in Aba on Matchday 5.
That makes Saturday’s encounter particularly interesting as Pillars seek to protect home advantage while Sporting Lagos attempt to convert their competitive performances into another positive result.
RANGERS DEFEND TOP SPOT
Defending champions Rangers International currently lead the table with 13 points from six matches, following four wins, one draw and one defeat.
The Enugu club moved to the summit after a 1–0 victory over Warri Wolves on September 30 and will now face an Abia Warriors side that defeated Bendel Insurance 3–0 in its previous outing.
The Rangers–Abia Warriors encounter will be played at the Awka Township Stadium on Sunday.
With Rivers United and Barau FC only one point behind the champions, Rangers cannot afford to lose ground if they are to remain at the top after Matchday 7.
BARAU’S UNBEATEN RUN MEETS BENDel TEST
One of the weekend’s most intriguing fixtures will take place in Benin City, where Bendel Insurance host Barau FC.
Barau have emerged as one of the early-season pace-setters, recording three wins and three draws from their opening six matches. They are currently third with 12 points.
Bendel, meanwhile, have nine points after three victories and three defeats. Their latest outing ended in a 3–0 defeat away to Abia Warriors, giving Sunday’s home fixture added importance.
The match therefore brings together an unbeaten Barau side and a Bendel team seeking a response in front of its home supporters.
ENYIMBA LOOK TO BUILD ON GOAL-FILLED WIN
At the Enyimba Stadium in Aba, Enyimba will host Plateau United in another significant Matchday 7 fixture.
Enyimba entered the season among the clubs expected to compete near the top but endured a difficult opening period. Their 4–2 victory over Shooting Stars on September 30, however, provided an important boost.
Plateau United arrive in Aba sitting fourth with 11 points from six games, meaning the fixture could have a direct impact on the developing upper end of the table.
RIVERS UNITED ALSO IN THE MIX
Rivers United, currently second with 12 points, will welcome Ikorodu City to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The Port Harcourt side remains unbeaten after six matches, with three victories and three draws. Ikorodu City, meanwhile, are seventh on the table.
The fixture provides Rivers United with an opportunity to maintain pressure on Rangers while Ikorodu City look to strengthen their position in the upper half of the standings.
THE EURO-MATCH FACTOR
Beyond the individual fixtures, Matchday 7 is taking place against the backdrop of a new commercial era for Nigerian top-flight football.
The NPFL began the 2026/27 season under a new three-year title sponsorship agreement with EuroMatch valued at $7.5 million, or $2.5 million per season. Under the announced structure, 60 percent of the annual sponsorship revenue is allocated to the league’s 20 clubs.
The commercial development gives the current season an additional dimension. The expectation is not simply for clubs to compete on the pitch but for the increased commercial attention surrounding the league to translate into stronger club operations, player welfare, visibility and overall professionalism.
In that context, every Matchday becomes part of a larger test of whether the league’s new commercial momentum can be matched by improved sporting and organisational standards.
