WORLD HEPATITIS DAY 2026: NOA TARABA DIRECTORATE URGES TARABANS TO “BREAK IT DOWN”

The National Orientation Agency, Taraba State Directorate, joins the global community to commemorate *World Hepatitis Day 2026* observed every *28th July*.

The 2026 global theme *”Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down”* is a call for all citizens to dismantle barriers of ignorance, stigma, and poor access that prevent people from getting accurate information, testing, vaccination, treatment and care.

*The State Director, Zakari Kasimu Mohammed*, said viral hepatitis remains a silent but dangerous disease that attacks the liver and can result in liver failure, liver cancer, and death if untreated.
“However, hepatitis is preventable and, in many cases, treatable. Safe and effective vaccines exist for Hepatitis B, while Hepatitis C can be cured with appropriate treatment. Early testing and prompt medical care save lives,” he stated.

*KNOW THE FACTS*
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are mainly spread through:
– Unsafe blood transfusions
– Sharing needles, syringes or other sharp objects
– Use of unsterilised instruments for tattoos or body piercings
– Mother-to-child transmission during childbirth
– Unprotected sexual contact with an infected person – _Hepatitis B_

*Hepatitis is NOT spread* through hugging, shaking hands, sharing food or drinks, coughing, or other casual contact.

*WHAT YOU SHOULD DO*
In line with the campaign flyer, NOA Taraba urges all residents to:
1. *Get informed* – Learn the facts and educate your family and community
2. *Get tested* for Hepatitis B and C, especially if you are at risk
3. *Get vaccinated* – Ensure newborns receive the Hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth and complete all doses
4. *Stay protected* – Avoid sharing needles, razors and sharp objects. Insist on safe medical practices

“Together let’s break down barriers, stigma and silence for a healthier Nigeria and a healthier Taraba state

The Directorate calls on traditional rulers, religious leaders, schools, CSOs, health workers, and the media across the 16 LGAs of Taraba to help amplify this message.
