The office of Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Flagberer welcome the Executive Orders recently signed by His Excellency, Dr. Agbu Kefas, on the prohibition of drug abuse, political thuggery, and environmental degradation.
These are laudable objectives that align with the aspirations of every law-abiding citizen. A society free from drug abuse, especially amongst the youth, political violence, and environmental degradation is one where democracy, security, and sustainable development can thrive. We therefore support these initiatives in principle and commend every genuine effort aimed at safeguarding the peace and well-being of the people of Taraba State.
However, the true measure of leadership lies not merely in signing Executive Orders but in enforcing them with fairness, consistency, transparency, and impartiality.
The prohibition of political thuggery must never become a pretext for suppressing lawful political activities, intimidating opposition supporters, or restricting constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of association, expression, and peaceful assembly. The law must apply equally to every political actor, irrespective of party affiliation or proximity to those in authority.
Likewise, the campaign against drug abuse must be intelligence-led, evidence-based, and free from selective enforcement. It must not be used as an instrument to target perceived political opponents while overlooking offenders connected to the ruling establishment.
The law must never become an exercise in “do as I say, not as I do.” Public confidence is built when those entrusted with authority lead by example and willingly subject themselves to the very standards they expect others to uphold.
As the 2027 electoral process gathers momentum, we call on the Taraba State Government, security agencies, and all relevant institutions to ensure that these Executive Orders strengthen the rule of law rather than undermine democratic competition. The impartiality of law enforcement will determine whether these measures are remembered as instruments of justice or viewed as tools of political convenience.
We equally urge our supporters across the state to remain peaceful, disciplined, and law-abiding at all times. Let our campaigns continue to be defined by ideas, policies, civility, and respect for democratic values, not by provocation, intimidation, or violence.
Taraba belongs to all of us. The laws of the state must protect every citizen equally, regardless of political persuasion. That is the foundation of constitutional democracy, responsible governance, and lasting peace.
